I'm trying to decide whether to use an ati 9700 pro or a nvidia 6800 in my HTPC. I'm not going to game on it at all, so 3d doesn't matter. Video quality is what I'm looking for and I've seen/heard anecdotal evidence that suggests that ati has better 2d video quality. It is outputting to a 1080p 47in lcd through the dvi port so it makes a difference which card does better up conversion to the dvd's. Anyone have any experience/suggestions on this?

DVI looks more or less the same. ATi looked better back in the day when they were only maker of their cards and nvidia partners were cutting too many corners (geforce3 and earlier)

Both are going to look the same if played at the same resolution. You should be more concerned with which will provide the best video decode performance. My thinking is the 6800 should be better than the 9700 Pro based on the history of the two cards.

if you flashed either card into a firegl/quadro card, you'd get better color reproduction.
