Well, my roommate took the plunge last year and decided to get a Sony laptop. Not a bad little machine, but the Windows ME preload on the thing was DOG slow! Finally, he decided he wanted Windows 2000 about a month ago.
Let me tell you one thing. Sony support is a JOKE! We couldn't find the driver for the integrated ESS sound/modem combo, and they wouldn't tell us where to find one or anything. I ended up digging one up at (of all the places) Microsoft. So that works fine.
Now, to the point about DVD. The discs play, but they are choppy. Before anyone says it, yes I have checked the DMA settings and they are enabled for both hard drive (POS Fujitsu) and DVD (Toshiba 8x). No effect. I have tried loading the VIA Busmaster drivers and again, no effect. I have tried two different DVD players as well (PowerDVD 3 and WinDVD 2000). Both of them exhibited the same symptom of choppiness
.
Does anyone have any idea of a solution for this problem? It's driving me bonkers, and my roommate does NOT want to go back to ME.
TIA
