Dvd Problem (Is it dead?)

I wake up to find that my Dvd drive is possesed it constantly opens and closes and doesnt even open all the way and itll go back and forth like its possesed or something i tried taking out the ide cable but to no avail and i switched the power cable it was hooked up to but again no avail. Ive run a virus scan with the latest definitions and nothing came up and now with it plugged in my computer wont even start up it goes to detecting ide devices and just hangs there..... so does anyone have an idea
 
Sounds like something is shorting the tray open and close button...did the face get kicked or hit accidently? Does this happen immediately at boot up when the drive gets juice from PS?

Either way if it still relatively new I would RMA if I could...
 
Yea it does it rite after bootup but it didnt get hit that i know of but now it only sits there with the busy lite on and does nothing.
 
Are you able to get a disk in there? try slipping in some ozzy or AC/DC and see what happens, that'll fix it :|
 
with just the busy light on now? Did you switch the ide cable around and now it is incorrect? may not be possible anyway....

Nothing would stay in it when it was going bananas but i couldnt even open and screw AC/DC how bout GNR lol im going to Ozzfest tho so i cant say no to Ozzy but another thing is weird my moms modem took a crap tonite just like 5 min ago that smelled like it got fried to damn things
