there are modern dvd players that can upscale your current 480 dvd's to 720p and 1080i and that's the resolution of hd-dvd and bluray. then what's the point of hd-dvd if we could already get 720p and 1080i out of our current dvd's besides a bigger capacity that hd-dvd and blu ray has to offer?

is there a huge difference between hd-dvd vs dvd upscale?

because the current players do nothing more than scale the video...if your hdtv has a decent scaler, it is already doing that. so there is no need for the upscaling player. furthermore, current discs are just 480...and you cant make something out of nothing...ie the extra pixels for 720/1080 are not there and need to be interpolated...with blu-ray, the info is there and the source is masterd at 720/1080 directly to dvd.

imgaine taking an image 640x480 and just reszing it in photoshop to 1024x768...its not going to look as good as the original image at 1024x768. simplified explanation, but you get the idea.

Why would they release upconverting DVD players you mean?

If you have a tv with a crappy scaler, a DVD player that upconvets the 480i source to HD would do a better job and thus the final picture would be better on an HD set.

exactly as YOyoYOhowsDAjello said...if your scaler in the set is crapy you could try one of those. 480 is 480 no matter how you spin it, you can't just make information up to fill the missing pixels...you might gain a small edge in quality, but I doubt it is what you are expecting. Blu-ray on the other hand will be true HD quality.

I've tried several upconverting players, inclduing the denon and zenith, and I still think my Panny looks just as good. The tv is a Sony GWIII.

I'd like to try the Panasonic S77 (or S97 if I could find it) to see if it does make any difference on my set.

for the cost of one of those upscaling DVD players... I'd rather have an HTPC which can produce much better picture.

true, but youre not building an HTPC for 200+ shipping that can scale to 1080. not to mention to endless tweaking that an HTPC needs...or the day you got 10 friends over to demo it and it BSOD's

Don't get me wrong ... I use an HTPC, but its not for everyone, and not everyone can dedicate a 2ghz+ machine to use ffdshow.

S97

I got the S77 recently and I like it. I'm not using the upscaling naturally on my 480p projector, but I wanted something will good image quality.
