dvd players + skip protection?

I'm just curious, does such a thing exist?

I've got plenty of DVDs that skip from time to time in my console dvd player, but if play them on my computer, they play absolutely fine.

I'm guessing dvd players on the PC try to stay "ahead" of where you actually are and give the drive more time to read something that may be harder to read, right?

so why don't they have DVD players with ram that try to do essentially the same thing; keep ahead of where you are so the chances of it skipping are radically reduced?

They do. Different DVD players have different amounts of cache, and that helps some get through scratches better than others. It's also why some players really pause at a layer change, while some you don't notice it.

Console based DVD playback is just a bad idea. Between college and home I have 3 stand alone DVD players I use and have never seen any skipping in any of them besides layer changes, and even those are normally handled well. Consoles, however, I've had two playstations die from crappy optical drives dieing (and got a free game from Sony due to a class action lawsuit on this). Also I used to rent game systems for big parties back when game systems used cartridges, however Block Buster will no longer rent out game systems. When I asked why they said the new optical drive based ones wear out too quick. So basically their drives get more wear, are almost certaintly cheaper than a name brand drive you'd get for your PC or in a high quality DVD stand alone, aren't expected to playback many formats, the hardware often sells for a loss initially making keeping manufacturing costs low by cutting corners very critical, etc.

by console dvd player I meant a standard dvd player (not a computer). I didn't mean a gaming console.

if different dvd players have different sized caches, how come they're never advertised? I can't recall ever seeing that..

Because most users don't know or care, because they wouldn't know what it was if it was advertised.

How are XBox consoles for playing back DVDs? They use a more-or-less standard PC-type drive, and they certainly have plenty of RAM (compared to other game consoles or standalones) to buffer with.
