first: digix?
second: 90 day warranty?
third: makes NO mention of vcd/svcd formats
fourth: Can't play divx, divx isn't open source.. doubt a player will do xvid anytime soon

Apex still rules for multi-format playback with my new player, the JVC XV-FA900BK a nicer,
albeit somewhat more expensive, running a close second. Plays DVD, AudioDVD, Svcd, VCD,
Cd audio and MP3 and handles 7 disks.

The Toshiba sd 2900 is a pretty good buy at amazon.com with free shipping (77$ i think)

i like it cause its really stylish and thin, and plays a handful of formats with superior video and audio then any generic dvd brand (including aPex)

oh the 2800 version of it is ok too for a lil less the price~

almost all these cheap players play all the accepted formats...theres really no need to even question this...most of these are just plain IDE type DVD drives sitting in a boxed chassis...prolly all these are made in one factory in China...I dont have this but can say for sure that they will support virtually every format....there was talk sometime ago that players will stop adverti\sing VCD compatibility in the USA...seems to be true cos most DVD players out today do not mention VCD compatibility these days..buts thats not saying the players dont play VCDs. Anyway here is the region free hack for this player

You haven't setup PM, so I hope you come back to field this question...

Does that particular model JVC pause at the layer change on dual layer discs? I have an older model JVC with most of the same features (with the exception of playing CD-Rs and 7 disc tray) and was interested in getting this one, but not if they haven't fixed that annoying pause.

I agree with the rest, but 90 day warrantees for consumer electronics are pretty standard.

If only it had a front display. I just picked up one of the Apex 1110w drives from walmart for the same price as this and it would be a great drive if not lacking a front display as well. Never noticed how much I missed that until I was without it. Went ahead and dropped the extra coin for a higher notch player. Link There is a $5 off coupon and free shipping, costs a little more, but does a lot more too.

Dual-Layer DVD's usually have a pause no matter what player you have, because the laser takes about 1 second to refocus (actually manufactures rate it at 500-600ms)

However, some players buffer the transition with a technique that cache's the entire data stream of video and audio. The buffer is usually very small, along the line of 2mb, just enough to hold 600ms of AC3+MPEG2 without skipping.

You can bet no player under $200 has a stream buffer.

I have a Phillips and it plays everything i throw at it..

VCD/SVCD/DVD/JPEG cd's/mp3/audio

It rules, I have no complaints, especially since I paid only $90 for it like 7 months ago.

the big thing use to be VCD/SVCD/XVCD compatibilty...although that's still important, now it's dvd-r/dvd+r/dvd-rw/dvd+rw

for that price go to walmart and get a Norcent...it really plays everything. Caveat on Apex. It is not the play-it-all player that people think. really depends on specific models..just look at dvdrhelp.com formerly called vcdhelp.com and go to the dvd player section.

My Apex will play Ritek DVD-Rs, but not Maxell. I originally thought it could not read the DVD-R format at all, so I went out and bought a Mintek 1600 for $49 from Best Buy (they still sell these for that price) and love it.
