I did not think this would be so hard.
I sold my 5-dvd pana changer in the hopes of getting a dvd player that plays divx.
I already have a phillips 5140 in my bedroom but it's hooked via RCA cables coz my pana tv does not have s-video connector.

now, for my crt tv downstairs, I need a divx player except I need s-video and optical out for my existing setup.
I also would like HDMI because I will be upgrading the tv in sept/nov of this year.

so, apart from the samsung, are there any dvd players with the 3 connections and able to play all the divx files that the phillips can?

any advice/suggestions are welcome.

Damn, that's expensive! I just got a Toshiba HD-A2 for $199.99 that plays actual HD-DVDs. It also does an amazing job of upconverting too. Almost as well as my computer. I don't know if it can play Divx files tho.

The HD-A2 normally goes for $299, right? The Oppos are pricey, but still cheaper than HD-DVD/Bluray alternatives and the quality is excellent.

Yeah, but you can find them cheaper and they come with 5 free HD-DVDs. I got mine from crutchfield for $199.99. Amazon randomly has deals too. They had it for $230 a while back. You just have to check around. There will be more deals in the near future.

actually, I spend considerable amount of time reading about the oppo's.
I think i'm ready to plonk down $150 for this player that will last me for years.
divx/xvid is very very important to me, so the HD players are out.

also the fact that I will buy a plasma in a few months, i can use HDMI.
oppo's customer service seems to be good and the product is excellent.

sometimes, you must pay to get value, and this is what i'm going to do.
so, thank you all.

970 is more for people using video processors that want 480i over HDMI... I'd say just go for a Philips 5960

Why are you stuck using s-video and optical? The Philips 5982 would be great if not for those requirements.

Can't beat the price, the Oppo is nice but you'll regret that soon IMO. The crashing HD-DVD and Blu-Ray player prices make a high end SD player a hard sell.

my existing HT receiver only has inputs for s-video, optical and component.
however, it does not do component switching.
now, my 32" CRT only has s-video and rca inputs.

so, right now, until I buy a new tv I can only hookup a dvd player with s-video and optical to my HT setup.
things will change when I buy a flat screen but who knows when that will happen.
i've been meaning to buy a plasma since aug 2005 and one expense after another just keeps cropping up.....

this is why s-video, optical, hdmi, divx and DVD+R DL capabilities are most important to me.
