1. progressive scan
2. component output
3. s-video output
4. be hackable to region free.

I got the Philips DVP-5900, which is essentially the DVP-642 but with HDMI and HD up-conversion. So far the picture is beautiful and it has played every disc I throw at it, all for only $100!
 
Another recommendation for the 642. I have it and it plays everything I've ever tried to play. Find it on sale for like $50 tops. But some people report it dies after 6-9 months so I got the 4 year warranty for $40 or so as well. $90 for 4 years guaranteed. heh.
