I just got home with my new sony wega kv27fs100 and its awesome. So much so that I'm going to throw my old apex dvd player that rattles out the window and go back to best buy in 10 minutes before they close and get a new dvd player. I'm slowly trying to build up my home theater system and right now the amp is an old sony with pro logic only and only handles composite video so I'm letting it do limited audio and letting the tv do the video switching. Among decent inputs the tv has 1 svideo and one component. I have my directivo running into the svideo so I'd like to use component in for the dvd and get a player that will still be good in the future. Best buy has a couple toshibas, would either of these be better than the other, or a better brand? I like to research these things more usually but am feeling impulsive tonight....

So anyway what dvd player should I buy? :D

Pioneer DV-563A is a great choice.

DVD, DVD-A, SACD, & of course Redbook CD. The only thing I wish it did is HDCD, but that's a minor gripe.

Onboard decoding of DD & DTS too.

$170 at Best Buy. Don't forget to pick up three pairs of RCA terminated interconnects if you want to use the analog outputs (necessary for DVD-A, SACD, and DD/DTS decoding).

Wow anything closer to $100? I want to be ready for the future but man I'll just buy a new one at that price since I wouldn't be using most of its nice features now I dont think.

My $100 sony has worked well since I got it a year ago, tracks rental DVDs much better than the 1998 model year Panasonic it replaced. The newer $100 model might have component video, if not a step or two up should have it.

I was thinking of getting a JVC which also hadr DVD-Audio but the owner reviews at Amazon said the reliability is awful.

In your shoes I'd consider Sony -or- maybe the Toshibas, but only after checking owner reviews at Amazon.

There are plenty of good quality but basic, no-frills players in the <$100 range. Pretty much anything by Panasonic is likely to be good.

Just make sure to get something that will take advantage of the component inputs you have (pretty much everything these days does).

I'm considering building a box as a dvd player. Does linux have good dvd playback compared to windows I wonder.
