DVD Player selection question. Want to replace my 'old' Apex.

Analog

Lifer
I want to replace my 'old' apex, with a newer model, was wondering what the 'must haves' are?

Is progressive scan required these days?

Also, are there dvd players these days that play movie clips downloaded from the internet and burned to CD? Such as all these Tsunami clips, or Iraq footage? That would be a cool option I guess.

Thanks.

Look at a Philps 642, it'll play divx

Thanks, is divx what I need for watching stuff burned on cd from the net?

yeah, well for divx encoded files at least -- which is most of them

Progressive scan is not necessary unless you have an ED or HD tv that supports 480p, most decent players have now anyways though -so you might as well look for it.

Things I'd want in a DVD player:

Progressive scan
A high quality de-interlacer (i.e. Faroudja)
DVD- and DVD+ playback
DVD-Audio
SACD
MP3

Nice to have:
Upconversion to 720p or 1080i.

How about the Panasonic s97 or the Denon 1910 for entry. Under $250. What is your budget anyways?

Note that the Panny only plays DVD-A. No sacd.

when would it be a better option to buy one of those wireless boxes where you can stream media from your PC to your tv ? What are those called again ?

Then the Panny s97 or Denon 1910 is right in your ball park. Both offer upconvert. Both Faroudja chip. You should check up on the SACD/DVDA thing for the Denon. From what I have read, the Panny uses the same chipset that the Denon 2910 uses... a $600 dvd player! Sony has a new upconverting player, but the test results I have read indicate the Panny and Denon beat it. Denon is showing a lot of green push tendencies. Everyone seems to enjoy the Panny these days. Check AVSForum.com and go to their DVD player section
