DVD Player Question - Hi Definition Conversion?

What is hi definition conversion on a DVD player and how exactly does it work?

I did a few quick searches on google and just get results from samsung.

I'm thinking of getting a 42" 720p LCD RPTV (Sony A10) instead of a Sammy 1080p 50", and from what people in AVSForum are saying a 480i signal over component works just as well on the Sony as an upconverting player's 720o signal.

My brother likes his upconverting Samsung 850 player (on his Samsung 61" 1080p DLP set), but he didn't take the time to compare its 1080i signal against 480i and 480p.
