Hi there, folks,

I asked about a good DVD player in this thread (http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2237946&enterthread=y)

I got one from the store yesterday, and I'm really pleased with the PQ and features, BUT I noticed a very high-pitched noise - almost ultrasonic - coming from it while it's on standby. If I unplug the power cord, the noise disappears.

It sounds very much like the noise I used to hear from an Antec power supply which I had to RMA a couple of years ago... at that time, that was suspected to be a dying capacitor... I wonder if that's also the case here, especially since the noise is not uniform, I can hear variations in tone and volume.

Shall I return it immediately and get another one? Has anyone else experienced this?

It's likely resonating with some other electrical component (thermostat, fan, light, wiring, etc.) in the room. Can you move it to a different room and see if it still makes the noise.

My receiver used to do this. As soon as I would turn it on or unplug it, the sound would disappear. It also only happened sometimes. On a day when it was making the noise, I adjusted the temperature on the programmable thermostat that was in the same room and directly across from the receiver. I noticed that there was a fluctuation in the noise when I hit the buttons on the thermostat. I turned off the thermostat, and the noise stopped. I just lived with it since I didn't want to move the thermostat or receiver. I moved to a different house in May and haven't heard the noise since.

Good observation! I will play with the thermostat and I'll also take the dvd player to another room, to see if the noise is still there...
