DVD Player problem

My girlfriend's two year old Toshiba 3750 DVD player had been using a composite video cable for a little awhile with no problems, but we switched to component cables and have been using them ever since. Recently we decided to try composite video again to see if we could see any difference, but although we could hear the audio, the video was black. We did unplugged the component cables. The TV did have the correct input selected (which didn't change). And now even when switching back to component cables, the picture is garbled. Hard to explain but from what I remember, the edge of the picture is in the middle of the screen, the picture is rotated about 45 degrees (pointing diagonally up), and only about half of the vertical lines are displaying.
I haven't tried yet to see what S-video does.

The TV is a Toshiba 32" Analog/SDTV, bought about 2+ years ago. It's not this model, but the rear jack looks the same as this:

Also since day one this player (or TV?) has had sound problems, where the volume goes up and down, every few seconds. No one else seems to notice it, but it drives me insane. Either it doesnt happen with some DVD's or it isn't noticeable by me. It doesn't happen with the VCR (coaxial).

Also does it make sense to switch it to output 480p to a SDTV? Will the quality be any better than outputting 480i?
