DVD player problem in XP Pro

I asked the guys in the hardware forum, but no help yet so i hope someone here can help......

I recently made my primary OS Windows XP and I am having problems with my Pioneer 116 drive. Windows doesn't see anything wrong and it installed windows drivers without a problem, but my DVD playback is choppy and eventually comes up with an error saying the disc is scratched. I know the disc is fine and Win98 has no problems with it at all. The problem isn't strictly DVDs, when I try to install a program using the DVD drive, it quits part way thru the install and says there was a problem reading a file. I use my CDRW drive and the install goes smoothly.
I figured it had to be XP, but I don't know what to do. I have the latest Detonator Drivers from Nvidia (Geforce2 GTS), i have DirectX 8.1, i have the latest sound driver from Sound Blaster (SB Live! Value)...........
I went to the MS website and I didn't find any help there. I know my drive is good and my DVDs are good.
Is there an update or drives that I am missing?

That's interesting...I have WinXP with a Pioneer 114 DVD drive with no problems. There should be no need to install drivers for it - WinXP should have everything covered.

Does the drive install some programs fine and not others, or does it mess up everytime?

I tried to install: Office 2000, NFS: High Stakes, Quake III Arena, Quake III Team Arena, Nero, Encarta, and Visual C++ 6.0 (just to name a few)
Out of those programs, only Visual C++ installed without any problems.
During the failed installs, there was no definate point where the install would quit. It was random. But you knew it was coming because the install would slow down dramatically then stop. It would pause on a file and then come up with an error saying that it can not read it.
OH, and I can't even run High Stakes. I installed the program with my CDRW, but the game looks to the DVD drive for the disc when u want to play the game. The disc spins up, the screen goes blank as if to start the game, but then it returns to the desktop.
As for DVDs, they run, but they are choppy, and then I get an error stating the disc is dirty. This happens to all of my DVDs

None of these problems occur in Windows 98.

Well, WinXP is not supported for NFS:HS. Some can get it to run in XP, but I can't and I have tried all the "workarounds".

Well, since it works perfectly in Win98, then at least you know the DVD drive is not defective. It obviously appears to be related somehow to WinXP, but I really have no idea as to why.

How are the DVD and CDRW drives configured? DVD master drive on secondary IDE and CDRW slave? Is DMA enabled? What BIOS settings are in affect?

Sorry for all the questions, but I need a little more info to hopefully diagnose the problem...

Both drives are on the secondary channel. DVD is primary and the CDRW is secondary. DMA is not enabled for either drive. I have tried to enable it on the DVD drive, but it will not stay enabled. I use the diagnositics program for my DVD player (MSI DVD) to enable DMA for the drive and then I restart when prompted. However, when windows comes back up, DMA is NOT enabled. I am not sure why, but then I haven't given it much thought.

did u try flashing the firmware? I had problem reading dvd, svcd with the latest Nvidia driver too.

Go into device manager & remove your ide controllers, delete primary & secondary controllers.

Then reboot & let xp redetect them,after that if all goes well you should be able to enable DMA on both dvd & cdrw drives.

Sorry i didnt get back earlier....ive been helping my dad with some of his problems...

I found the DMA and it was already enabled.....so i disabled it and the video is smooth. It works now. Thanks

BUT......now the sound is acting up. It sounds like there is Rice Crispys in the background. Snap, Crackle and Pop.
Any ideas on this one? LOL I have Sound Blaster Live!Value and I have the newest drivers from Sound Blaster for XP. This problem occurs with all my DVDs. It doesnt affect CDs at all.
