Oddly the dvd codec has been dropped from windows 10. I am sure I had it with windows 7 but after the upgrade I guess it got dropped. Any tips other than go back to windows 7?

I dont want to download malware or viruses as I dont know what to look for.

Myself, I like windows 10, glad I never bothered with windows 8.

I found out only by research that I do have a dvd player on my wondows 10 o/s called "Windows dvd player".
I did not know I had this, I had to put in the search typing out the full name before an icon popped up. Apparently some people have to pay £11.50 for this app but as I had windows 7 I could use it. I think it downloaded and installed on first use as it took a minute to start working.

Although I found out I do have a dvd player in windows 10 because of it being an upgrade from windows 7, I still downloaded VLC and I think it is great. I think I once used this a long time ago to play some avi files, this was back in xp or vista days.
I shall happily use VLC to watch 'Childs Play' now.

Thanks for the recommendation.

WMP(Window Media Player) and VLC both the option for DVD player, I personally used WMP and quite good response for any Window which is inbuilt function of Windows.

MPCHC should also handle DVD I think,
https://mpc-hc.org/

also KODI
http://kodi.tv/

like VLC they are opensource and very well known

personally I almost only use MPCHC for videos

some of these programs might not be as good as a dedicated dvd player software to navigate menus and such, so I think it's good to test them and decide for yourself
