The best you're going to get is a 1080i upconvert...I'd suggest going with the Oppo 971 ($200 or so online). If you have a larger budget than that, consult YoYo ;)

Edit: Holy jello speed batman :Q

It depends, what is your HDTV?

The built-in upconversion of my Samsung 1080p DLP is good enough that an old Sony 480i over component looked almost as good as the Samsung 1080p player I replaced it with.

You might be better off saving the money for other upgrades instead of spending $150-220 for a Samsung or Oppo.

The best you're going to get is a 1080i upconvert...
Not quite, the Samsung HLS- 1080p DLP sets this year do accept 1080p over HDMI, and the model 960 player upconverts to it.

If you're going to get a high-def player and like gaming, just pick up a PS3 (Bluray) or Xbox 360 (HD-DVD via attachment). Great prices compared to standalone players, plus you get some gaming/multimedia capabilities.

X box 360 works great with the HD-DVD just have to connect it via the VGA connection to be able to up convert normal DVDs to 1080p.

This is for my family and if we were to get a game system, I would be the main user. Thing is, I'm going to college in 8 months, so we'd need one that's standalone.

I have a Denon 1930CI which upscales to 1080p, using that Faroujda DCDi technology. I don't fully understand it, but it's far and away the best upscaler I've ever seen. I've never seen an Oppo in person but they're supposed to be excellent as well.

The oppo uses DCDi as well but I'm not sure on how well they are implemented in both cases.

Should we just go for the OPPO since it's cheaper? Unless there's a place I can get the Denon for less than the OPPO ...

I haven't really been looking at DVD player reviews, but if the 981 is as good as the 971 with the added feature of 1080p conversion, then I think that would be a very solid choice.

Honestly I've been very happy with the OPPO - I've used it on a 1080i 55" RPTV, a 720p widescreen projector, a 4:3 projector with DVI input, and a 32" CRT. Looks great on everything, very easy to use, no problems. I would recommend one for anyone's setup.

In that case yeah definitely standalone, you don't want video games distracting you ;) Plus you want something you family can easily operate. As easy as my Xbox with Xbox Media Center is to use, my wife still prefers using a straight DVD player - eject button, play button, pause button.

I think... with either one, you won't be disappointed. I picked up the Denon because the local store had it. They didn't have Oppo. Had they both been side by side, I'm not sure which I would have picked... but admittedly I love the look of the Denon player so that would have weighed in some.

Eh, on my neighbors Fujitsu plasma, the TV will upconvert better then the Samsung HD-860. Not surprising. On a Samsung LCD, I woudln't be surprised if it's built-in upconverter is better then anything shy of an Oppo/Denon, and even then, the quality difference may not be worth it. I say save up for HD-DVD instead.

The OPPO uses Faroudja DCDi technology as well. The 981 model was just released a few weeks ago. Mine is on order and should be arriving in a week. The 971 works great but I need an upgrade ;)

I've looked at upconverting DVD players and they're useless. You're simply not going to get HD quality, since the detail was never there to begin with.

If you already have a progressive scan DVD player, let the TV do the upconverting. If you absolutely have to have a new DVD player, then get an OPPO.
