I thought Nintendo was bringing DVD playback support to the Wii- either by firmware or a new SKU. I can't find anything about it since mid/late 2007. Is there any new info about this?
There was an article not too long ago that Nintendo had delayed it purposefully - I mean, what's the reason for having it if the regular one is selling like nuts?Originally posted by: Pandamonium

huh....I even owned a Wii and never realized it didn't play DVDs...that would be very useful though, especially since it was so small and compact for travel.

Do you really need your Wii to play DVDs?

Despite its small form factor, I've never really considered the Wii a portable console at all... its got the normal stuff you've gotta hookup, plus the sensor bar and calibration you've gotta do.

I can see the benefit for people who want less pieces of equipment.

I understand why they didn't include it by default, a lot of people probably don't need DVD playback and not having to build the cost of the licenses into the console saves these people money. What I don't understand is why a DVD channel hasn't been offered in the Wii Shop Channel from the start. Obviously there are people who want this feature and are willing to pay for it, why not make it available to them?Originally posted by: bunnyfubbles

Its not THAT hard and even with the setup hassle its compact size makes it MUCH easier to lug around than a 360 or PS3 as I could fit all the gear into a small backpack with ease. I actually took one with me on vacation to a beach house last summer and it worked out absolutely great on the few rainy days we had.
Of course the place already had a DVD player so that aspect was never an issue. While it would be neat if the Wii supported such a feature, it really isn't necessary because DVD players really are everywhere and thus I'm not surprised Nintendo isn't wasting any breath on it.
Because if you have a Wii, chances are you're advanced enough to have a personal computer already. The Wii is a gaming machine, not an internet browser.Originally posted by: Baked
