DVD Playback software no longer detects drive

Hello,

I have a Dell Studio 1535 laptop with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I'm having issues with a software that came prepackaged with the laptop to play standard def DVD's as well as Blu-Ray DVD's (I have a BD-DVD Drive). The program is MediaDirect 4.0, which is made for dell by Cyberlink.

Recently, whenever I put in a DVD or a Blu Ray disc into the drive, the software either begins to load up and then close itself, or it gives me an error saying that DVD drive's not detected. Meanwhile windows media center plays standard DVD's just fine (unfortunately it lacks the functionality to play Blu-Ray).

I know it's not the disc because when the program was working fine I watched about half the movie and then stopped it to watch it later. The next time I inserted the disc into the drive and the computer froze. After doing a hard reboot, I started having these issues.

I've tried reinstalling the program and reinstalling the drive from the device manager, but it didn't solve anything.

What gave me hope is when I tried to play the blu-ray movie with other 3rd party software. First I downloaded a trial of Cyberlink's PowerDVD 9. It gave me the same error, but I wasn't surprised since the MediaDirect program is also by Cyberlink.

Another program by ArcSoft called TotalMedia Theatre 3 did play the movie which leads me to believe that there is something screwed up in the settings for Cyberlink's program.

I need to now somehow figure out what's gone wrong and fix it and I'm hoping someone here can offer me some advice on the matter.

Thanks
