DVD Playback quality in laptop

My girlfriend just got a new Compaq X1000 laptop. I've never had a laptop with DVD, and was surprised that the image quality of the playback was quite bad.

It is a Centrino 1.3GHz, ATI Radeon 9200 graphics (32 meg), and a WSXGA+ screen.

The problems are with areas of low contrast, like walls, the sky, etc. The color is extremely grainy, and in some scenes it's as if there were a grey film over the screen. It's watchable, but doesn't look very good. We were disappointed.

Does anyone have advice on how we could improve the quality of the DVD playback? Here is what we have tried so far, in BOTH WinDVD and PowerDVD:

Enable and disable "hardware acceleration"
Change resolution and color depth (from 800*600 16mil to the highest)
Re-installed the graphics driver from Compaq's website
Tried several DVDs (Moulin Rouge is our best test, since it's extremely visual).

Thanks guys!

Many LCD screens aren't particularly good for recent hi-res/speed games or DVD viewing - OK in a pinch like when on a plane or in a hotel and want to pass some time.
At home, I would connect an external CRT monitor for best quality or run it thru your TV if the laptop has that kind of output.

I have a Toshiba 2.0 Celeron laptop with 256 and onboard Intel graphics. It is new but bottom of the line. It also came with a DVD and WinDvd. The DVD playback is not bad. It doesn't compete with my desktop with Viewsonic VP171b monitor but I don't think it is awful. I would think you would get similar results.

I would not expect the laptop to compete with a desktop setup but if it is really bad, maybe you should take a trip to a comp-usa or best buy, bring along a dvd, and test in a few different machines to see if there is a problem with your machine or your expectations are too high.

Thanks guys. I think I just set my expectations too high after checking out the high-end portable DVD players at Best Buy. Man, those things look nice... too bad they cost almost as much as the laptop!
