DVD playback problem

We bought a used DVD player (setbox, not in a computer) and bought a DVD to try it out. It worked. We then went to EB Games and bought 2 used DVDs. They do not play properly. One is very dark and the other doesn't horizontal lock (wavy lines). Before I condem both disks, and EB Games, could the problem be that the disks need cleaning? And what is the best method to clean them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Lynn
Mods if this isn't the right place for this please move it. I did a search, looked through 400 threads and still didn't figure out where to put it.

How's the DVD hookup to the TV? And what was the DVD that worked?

Almost sounds like Macrovision copy protection rearing its ugly head.

I have an older tv, so I had to hook it up via a VCR. The original dvd that worked was a "Vintage Movie Classics", 3 old movis on one dvd. We have also watched a dvd with 2 "Barney Miller" shows on it and it worked fine. The dvds that don't work are "Men in Black 2" and "Peter Pan". Tanks for taking the time to answer. Lynn
