Just wanted to check hows the dvd playback on a voodoo 3 2000. Im looking forward to get a dvd drive.

My system is a duron 700 with 256mb of ram and the voodoo 3.

Also, if i would be upgrading now my video card, the options in my budget would be the geforce 2 mx, voodoo 5500 and geforce ddr. I prefer the image type of the voodoos, also im worried with some issues using nvidia with via and sb live. I dont care about the fps as soon as i keep 50+- fps at 1024x748. Looking at these facts, the voodoo 5 would be my option, but im worried about the quality of dvd playback on 3dfx cards. Poor quality would be enough for me to go for the MX which is also somewhat cheaper.

The Voodoo3 doesn't have any sort of Hardware Motion Compinsation, so its not going to make it run any smoother, fortunetly a d700 is plenty for DVD Decoding.

The quality on a v3 is so/so, at one point I did run DVDs off of a v3 and it was ok. But not as good as an Nvidia Card, and definetly no were near ATI or Matrox.

I havn't seen a V5 do DVD so I can't comment on those :\

Yeah, you should be able to get pretty good quality DVD playback with your CPU speed.

As for your second question, you should also add the Radeon 32mb DDR to your list. Not only is it pretty cheap, but it also has the best DVD playback and is faster than the Geforce MX and Voodoo 5. In addition the Radeon's 2D and 3D quality easily beats the Geforce MX and also slightly edges out the Voodoo 5.
