DVD playback locks my computer up!!! HELP!!!!!!!

When playing DVD's after about 5-10 minutes, my computer locks up, totaly freezes, reboot and everything is fine no errors. I just built this system (my first). When I loaded the DVD it installed this PCFriendly program which I guess is a DVD player (Can I avoid this?). I tried using that player and the player that came with my vid card....same problem. Is it possible I overwrote some drivers? Should I uninstall and reinstall my vid card drivers? Should I do a windows update?

AMD900 TBird
MSI K7T PRO2A
ATI AIW 128PRO
SoundBlaster Live MP3+
Pioneer 16X DVD
PC133 128 Cas3
Windows 98SE

Check and see if the DMA is enabled on your DVD drive. Sometimes this causes issues.

If you need more help, just ask! I have the K7T Pro (original) with the same video card. Also, be sure and disable AGP 4x in the BIOS, as the VIA chipset has problems with this card.

Hope this helps!! 😀

DMA is enabled, but if I remeber correctly (I'm not at home) I have my bios set up as 4x. Change it to 2x or 1x? Is this a big difference performance wise? Thanks for your help, I'll try that tonight.

Go ahead and change it to 2x. I was running mine at 4x initially, and was having lockup problems from hell. I switched it back to 2x and haven't looked back since. The performance difference between the two of them is not that great, according to all the reviews I have read. I play Unreal Tournament and it works just fine for me at 2x. 😀

Let me know if this works for you. Also, which drivers are you using with your card?? Initially, I was using the drivers off of the included CD. I have since started using the latest "released" driver set off of the ATI website. Everything works fine, with the exception of DVD. I am getting a lot of pixellation in dark scenes (i.e. where the screen is totally black). Are you having this problem as well? (Obviously you won't be able to answer that ? until you see if your problem is fixed by the solution I mentioned above!)

Hope this gets you where you need to be!

Check that you have the latest 4 in 1 drivers installed (reinstall it since ATI's drivers overwrite the VIAGART drivers), DMA enabled, fast writes disabled, check that the fan on your video card and CPU are running and if you are overclocking your CPU, run it it in its default speed.

I did a fresh install last night soup to nuts. I've tried ME and 98SE same problems. I updated all drivers VIA - 4.25a have not tried 4.28, AIW - 4.12.6292. The only other thing I can think of is maybe I have applications running in the background (ex. Norton System Works)causes crashes but i don't think thats it because I think I tried playing DVD's before and after I installed it. The only other thing is that I possibly replaced drivers(either Win98 or ATI) with older ones when I installed the ATI drivers or when that PCFriendly installed?? I'll keep you posted if I can fiqure this out. Thanks again

If I update to VIA 4.28 do I first need to uninstall 4.25? Where would I find fast writes? Remember I'm knew to this and still learning.

Did you OC? The problem I had seems relate to the PCI speed. When ran 90 FSB (30 PCI), my DVD almost locked every time. Running at default 66 fsb(33 pci), problem solved.

Update>

I've uninstalled and upgraded to VIA 4.28 and my DVD was able to play longer but still crashed. Then I disabled the AGP 4X in the BIOS and everything seems to be working great now. One other question, when I disabled the 4X does it default to 2X? Or do I have to go elsewhere in the BIOS or system to change these settings? Matt thanks for your help!

It defaults to 2X...you really should have followed Mattster's advice 2 disable AGP 4X in Bios sooner & saved yourself a lot of re-installing SW!

His advice was rite on the $, I know all 2 well as I had same problems with my AIW 128pro, DVD-Rom & an EP-7KXA. After discovering on my own about the 4X issue I saw this at KT7FAQ site:

"Why is my system unstable with a ATI AIW 128 Pro card installed?

It has been reported that if this card is run at AGPx4 mode then general system instabilities can occur (not necessarily graphics related). These can be solved by running the card at AGPx2. Note, the graphics performance difference between these two modes in negligible..."

Then whats the big deal about 4X? Just another marketing scam? Do other 4X vid cards have this problem? I'm full of questions today. Building this computer has consumed my life, thank god work has been slow.

Yes, 2day AGP4X is mainly a marketing issue, but in the near future with games, etc maximized for 3DNow+, SSE+, DirectX8+ & given more memory bandwidth (with much higher FSB speeds)...then 4X will be noticeably better!

You have ran into an issue reproduced by many K7Tpro-2A owners on this board, myself included. It has to do with K7Tpro-2A's 686B southbridge implementation. Only way I was able to stop the movie playback crashing on this board was to upgrade VIA IDE drivers.

Go to Viahardware, get 3011 IDE betas and install them in miniport mode. That should do the trick.

I had the same problems under Win98se. You probably don't want to hear this but I REALLY recommend using Win2000 if you don't already dual-boot. I've had no lockups or any problems under 2K with my DVD playback. In fact except for a few games I wouldn't even bother with 98 unless you really need it.

PIII 733
Asus P3V4X
256MB PC133 SDRAM
Voodoo 5 5500
I/0 Magic 8x DVD (Use both WinDVD and PowerDVD both work fine under 2K)
SondBlaster Live! MP3+
Win2000/Win2000 Advanced Server/Win 98SE

jpprod - I had nothing but trouble with the VIA miniport BM drivers in W95B.
They would not support my Plex 8432CDRW or allow my LS-120 as boot A-drive!
