DVD playback just went bad

I have a nVidia GF2 MX and I'm using PowerDVD XP (4.0) to play DVDs on my computer. All of a sudden, my playback started getting bad. The DVDs play very pixelated like a 640x480 res game. It is also a bit choppy on my 1GHz system (It wasn't choppy before). I also notice that there is constant activity on the hard drive and DVD drive while playing a movie. The LEDs are blinking like crazy now whereas it wasn't as frequent before. I can't think of anything that could have affected it. It could possibly be the new SB Live! drivers I installed, but I recall it working fine for a few days after I installed them.

Any ideas?
 
does nvidia have a dvd system check like ATI does? probably don't because they don't really support dvd much, but its worth a shot if they have them.

check to see if dma was disabled some how also.
 
The first thing I checked was DMA. It's fine. I even installed the VIA IDE Miniport driver. No change.

I have a dual monitor set up. My secondary card is a ATI RageXL 8MB PCI card. I switched that card to primary and playback seemed fine (except for lag due to it being 8MB PCI with no hardware accel). I turned off the acceleration function in PowerDVD for my GF2 and it seemed to improve the lag and picture quality somewhat, but it is still not as clear as it used to be. HD/DVD access is still high. I guess I'll try updated reference drivers and see what happens.
 
Similar problem here but with Radeon card.

All working fine and then I installed the new SB drivers.

Only way I fixed it was to delete both vid and SB drivers and then re install vid drivers and then SB drivers in that order. Shouldnt make a difference but it did.

hm, you have an ATI card, if you have the ATI DVD player, go to control panel and run the test, see if anything else fails. If its nothing, then its probably your card or drivers.
