DVD playback display corruption

Whenever playing back a DVD with hardware acceleration turned on the video display becomes all jumbled up. Green, pink, black and white static, sometimes a little of the picture comes through. If I let the video continue playing in this manner for more than a few seconds the system will hang. Not restart, but the screen goes black and I have to do a hard reboot.

This happens with almost any program I have: Zoom player pro, WMP (8,9,10), powerdvd 4.0, media player classic. VideoLAN(VLC Media Player) seems to play fine, though I'm not entirely sure if hardware acceleration is enabled.

Video card:
9800np->p - harware accel was working fine, and gaming still works fine. used to use omega drivers, switched to ati, same problem. Motherboard BIOS checks out fine, agp aperture, etc. Fast writes and write combining off in control panel.

Anyone had a similar experience?
