New HP 5470 notebook, Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2002, came with WinDVD, and ... Windows ME. I had such unhappy problems with ME that I removed it and installed my old dependable 98se. Unfortunately, the WinDVD was a part of the free software packeage, with MS Money, Online Services, and all that. Long after I got all my stuff installed to 98, I realized there's no DVD Player for me to use. The notebook comes with a System Recovery CD set, but the only way to run it (I spent a lot of time with HP tech guys on this) is to let it format and reinstall everything as if from the factory. No way am I going to do that and start over a 2nd time with 98.

So I thought I'd at least try the free trial version of WinDVD 3.0, and to my surprise it won't run. Play a DVD and it says "Create Overlay failed. Try a lower resolution or lower color settings." I tried them all, and no luck.

So, same DVD-ROM drive, same drivers, same DVD player (Trial Version is supposedly fully functional, but only lets you see 5 minutes). Different OS and it won't work???

Any clues? There must be a piece of the puzzle missing here. DVD stuff is new to me, so I can believe I'm just being dumb. Help?
