DVD no longer detected when laptop unplugged?

The topic and summary says about it all. The DVD drive is no longer recognized when I unplug the laptop.

Google isn't helping, neither is Dell. Anyone experience this before? I've perused all power settings and BIOS settings and can't figure anything out. Return time?

I have heard of this but don't know the specifics. A friend resolved this by changing a regisrty entry, but i don't know which one. Have you checked the event log?

No I haven't - good idea. Will check tonight.

Sound like a power management issue.
Try the Dell Quick Set program and see if you have a setting to disable the power management on the DVD drive.
Also go into Device Manager and check to see if a power management option is available for that drive.

Thanks - I'll try that too. Haven't looked at those...
