So I'm checking out the Preorder deals for Spidey 2 and see there's a few different varieties to choose from.

...In particular there's a 'Superbit' format where they supposedly don't give you any extras because the space is used up from having a considerably larger video file from using a higher bitrate conversion.

I see the propaganda over at the sony site at:
http://www.sonypictures.com/cthe/superbit/

But i was hoping to get some real opinions on it.

Thanks.

I don't have a high end home theater so "Superbit" is overkill for me, w/ my modest HT setup, I'd rather have the extras :)

Depends on your HT setup. If you dont have HDTV, it doesnt really matter.

OTOH, if you dont watch the special features, then get the superbit :)

I'd say it totally depends on the type of setup you have. You're using RCA or SVideo, then I think it wont make a difference. Component might be able to show you the better quality. Or, if you're using a VGA projector or something, you'd most likely get a good picture. But, I'd have to say that I would most rather have the extras than the possibility of a better picture. Plus, when you go to backup the DVD, it's going to have to do some serious compressing...

Yeah, I was going to say that the SBs shouldn't have any "extras" as all the capacity is dedicated to the movie. Almost all (if not all) of the studios have a line of releases that are a higher bitrate, geared towards the more discerning buyer. And ontop of SB, there's Deluxe SB which is totally over-the-top version of the release. Lastly, having a DTS track is one of the biggest and most important differences in itself.

I think the other comparable lines are the Platinum Series, Vista Series...and others. I'd have to get up from my chair to check, sorry ;) (And something of importance here...the other studios include numerous extras and audio tracks in their "super" lines as well, usually split over 2 discs, whereas the SBs are usually just one)

yes, just 480p. ist mostly marketing. losing special features is bull. they should be included on a 2nd disc.

I'd rather have Superbit than the special features, to me special features are just junk fill in.

Totally worth it if you like good PQ. I hardly ever watch the extras anyway. I much prefer SQ and PQ over nice menus and the crappy extras. If they must have extras, put them on a second disc.

This is fairly accurate.

SUPERBIT is simply using all of the disc for hte movie only. Same resolution, just higher quality compression of the video.

depends on the movie. the new starwars set without the 2.5hr documentary commentary and other goodies would just be less of a deal without em. of course it depends, just like how the movie itself can vary in quality. theres no way that all bonus features are worthless. if a film is really worth buying, and watching more then once it should have decent features for a better understanding of the film. its esp valuable for classic movies, where its nice to know how it was recieved in the context of its times etc. unless ur some geezer who's seen everything:p
