DVD media speed question

I have a 2.4x DVD burner in my laptop and I have been using usually 4x rated DVDs just fine. Last week I ordered some DVDs from Staples and didn't think much of the speed because I thought it would all be backwards compaible... Well, I got 8x DVDs and I haven't been able to get them to work in my burner at all. It doesn't automatically detect as a blank disc. I tried using it Nero, it would say that I need a DVD+R/RW and the disc I put in was only DVD+R.

I read the package and it says that the disc were made for 8x DVD burners and has nothing about working with lower speed drives. So I'm not sure if it's something on my end or just that the disc are bad. Though, I figure either way I have some recourse because when I ordered online, it said I was getting 4x DVDs...

Thanks for any help.

It should work as far as I know.

By my understanding, and I might be wrong, the DVDR speed is just how precise the balancing is. An 8x DVDR means that it's rated to be balanced properly up to that speed.
