What differences are there in DVD media from different vendors? How does this affect the durability (ie. how long will the data actually be readable from the disc)?

I bought a bunch of cheap $h** CD-Rs a while ago, and I've been regretting it since..

Unfortunately, the vendors re-badge discs that were made by someone else, and they constantly change their source. I've had good luck with +R DVD's that ID as RICOHJPN, sold under the Imation and TDK labels. Sometimes, cheap discs are OK unless you completely fill the DVD to capacity; one workaround is to only burn 4gb to the disc.

Good site, broadkipa.. too bad you need to pay to access their forums :-<

I'm looking at either:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/appl...94631&Sku=K51-2038
or:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/appl...68697&Sku=K51-2030

because it's relatively inexpensive for DVD media (even though I have a 2x burner.. I'm assuming 8x certified media = better than 4x, all other things being equal?). Problem is, I don't know if the media is any good (HP = good or crap for DVD+R?).. and the store has a crap return policy (or so I've been told..)

I like the RITEKG04's they work beautifully in my NEC 2500A. DO NOT BUY compUSSR's self-branded DVDRs, I bought 3 or 4 of them and none worked for vid/data, anything! If you have an NEC based burner you might want to check out "Herrie's Firmwares" he has added media support to drives through thier firmware. Herrie's Firmwares

Edit : Herries is offline right now due to some kind of hacker tampering but info on the firmwares can be found by googling

Fuji 8x dvd+r at Bestbuy,(made in Japan discs), are Taiyo Yuden, and are The best you can get, and are on sale for 30 bucks,(for 50), with a 5 buck MIR right now. Just make sure the top of the disc, and "where made" on the wrapper, say Made in Japan!
