I have a athlon at 1 Ghz, 256 2100 ddr ram, an asus motherboard maxtor hd, Lite-On DVD player

I've tried reformatting many times even tried win 2000 sp4 and then windows xp the problem is still there, the computer keeps freezing when i play a dvd, it runs fine for a while and then it freezes, if i reboot and start up the dvd again immediatly it freezes sooner but i check the CPU temperature and its normal (~50 C)

also my network card (a linksys) keeps connecting and reconnecting, i've written linksys for help and they said to turn down the media type to 10T base and i did and it solved the problem but transferring files across the lan is really slow...=(

anyone have any advice?? thanks guys much appreciate it

sounds like you may be having memory issues to me, as the dvd and nic are totally different.

does the dvd freeze on all dvd's or just particular ones? as this sometimes happens if the DVD uses too high of compression such that a software decoder can't handle the decompression of the feed.

Its not unheard of for a scratched/ dirty dvd to hang a pc.

Its also possible for a DVD player's lens to be dirty and it will freeze a PC when it fails to read. Use lens cleaner setup that can be bought at nearly any store that sells cds/dvds/cdrs. Do not use compressed air for this problem. Forcing compressed air on dust over a lens can fatally scratch the lens.

hmmm, how warm is you case getting? you might try running your pc with the case off and a small fan blowing on it, it's possible your video card is crapping out taking the whole system with it, do you have any problems playing 3d games? It's also possible your nic is causing the trouble, cheap nics are only around $10 I'd try a different one if you're having throughput problems with it.

its definitly not the dvd player, i just tried another pioneer one that works fine in my other computer, my roommate said it might be the power supply or the sound card because when it freezes there is this sound that keeps looping its a (santa Cruz) from turtle beach, my power supply has 2 fans a 92 and a 80...the 80 in the back doesnt work

the video card...could be but it doenst seem to be getting htat hot, its a geforce 2 ti64 from PNY....but i remember trying to play warcraft3 a while back and that would freeze too with the same looping sound, also when i tried watching an anime off windows media player it froze too,but that was only once

...any help
would be much appreciated

from your dvd player and game freezing problems, its either heat or a weak power supply.

What power supply are you running? You just might need a stronger one with a better brand name.

the 80 in the back doesnt work

there's your heat problem, that's the more important of the two fans, it's likely your powersupply is getting too hot.
