I am always amazed at how technology works, but this may be bound for a path like the PD-drive, DVD-RAM, and soon-to-be DVD-RW (which DVD+RW is better). So, unless you are looking for raw, cheap data storage and nil portability ...

Eventually there will have to be a new medium. We are less than 2 years away from the FCC mandated HD/Digital TV era and a new format will be needed to accomodate all the new resolutions (480p, 1080i, etc). These HD modes take up more space than a DVD/RW can hold so ther will be a new standard.

Less than 2 years? Nah, it's supposed to be 2006, but realistically it's not going to be completed (note I said completed, not started) until 2010 or after.

The article states this new technology can store up to 2 hours of HDTV-quality video, which takes up ~140MB per minute.

this stuff is always great news.

DVD source is just too low res for my likes. The quality really shows when watching on a monitor, and even on some higher end tvs.

Though, dvd authors also need to start using better source though. Some of the transfers these days are just not cool.

I can't wait for dvd-r myself to get cheap so I can start using something better than svcd or mpeg4v2 to watch vids.

heh, the major technological leap appears to be using violet lasers.. DVD's still use RED lasers. no big technological leap, they've been around for a while. the question is, what is going to develop into a standard?

I think FMD technology shows more promise as a DVD replacement than changing the laser's wavelength (DVR-Blue).

I think they sound great from a data prespective. You could easily back up your whole system a few times over w/one of those.

I still haven't bought a DVD-ROM drive for my computer, and don't really want for it to be my next upgrade....
