DVD Help!!!

Here's my problem. My system is:
duron 800
msi k7t pro2a
128 mb pc100 generic
hp 7500+ burner
pioneer 106s dvd
guillemot tnt2 ultra

the problem is that I can't get my DVD playback to work smoothly. It's Very jumpy and some dvd's don't work at all (gladiator, etc.) In searching for a solution, I noticed that DMA wasn't enabled on my DVD drive. So I selected it, rebooted, problem solved right? Wrong! Upon restart I found that I had the same symptoms and DMA wasn't enabled. I tried again and again, I've swapped cables, switched master and slave with my burner (that does have DMA enabled), i even swapped out for another dvd drive and I can get it to enable dma, why won't this pioneer work right?

any help would be Greatly appreciated

thanks
