DVD: Hardware or Software?

What's better for DVD playback: Hardware or software? Depending on the answer, what would be a good decoder card to get or software program. Thanks.

I vote Hardware. Why? I don't know the technical details, but Ati cards are probably the best.

I prefer
1. consumer desktop dvd player connect to tv
- the best
2. hardware dvd decode card connect to tv
- don't use the pass thru cable, it degrades the display quality.
just use the mon for control.
this is only good for pc close to the tv.
3. software dvd decoder on monitor
- the cheapest solution
