Which dvd encoder do you guys recommend? I am looking to encode some of my movies, so i can watch them on my laptop when traveling on the road.

I use AutoGK. I use DVDDecrypter to rip a DVD into IFO mode (it will automatically select the main feature, but if its a TV series disc or you want extended features, you'll have to figure out what title to rip). Then with AutoGK I do encoding. Though I'd like to have a little bit better quality, I don't feel like going through all the stuff on doom9.org since AutoGK is so quick and easy to queue up jobs.

Would Nero or FairUse offer me anything with better quality but same ease of use like AutoGK (or thereabouts)? I didn't even know Nero did encoding.

Nero encoding can be had with Nero Ultra. But thats $70 (I got that because I also do audio encoding and everything). You can also get the Nero Encoder alone for $30. Yes the quality is top notch. Rip disk using DVD Decrypter, deselect "fit to target" and import the dvd file, set quality to standard AVC. And you will get absolutely perfect DVD's. It converted my Chobits disc (7GB) to ~2GB while maintaining both languages and subtitle tracks. However, as with all h.264 encoding, be prepared to wait. That same above conversion took 22 hours to do (P4 2.8C Northwood 800FSB). But Nero has process control. Simply set it "low". It will use full power when not in use or whatever is available while being used. The 22 hours was well worth it. And I would definately reccommend this for DVD's. Though be warned DVD to MP4 is all it can do. Well, you can also convert to AVI, MP1, and 2 but thats a different process entirely.

Uhh. I think you have something wrong. I've encoded w/ Nero using the highest quality settings, and it took about 2.5 hours for a 2-pass encode on my Athlon XP 2500+. It's actually a fairly quick encoder.
