If this discussion is not allowed here, please just disregard...

I don't see anything illegal about this anyway. I have a few DVDs from Christmas and I'd like to encode to both VCD and DIVX. I understand it will take about 10 hours w/ a 1GHz processor... VCDHELP.COM showed me DVD --> VCD. How do I do DVD --> DIVX ?

Thx.

dun worri.. u r in the rite forum.. i jus hate it when people say someone isn't.... they r craps...

first.. get the Divx codec.... i presume u alredi hav it... :)
use FlaskMpeg..... it is the encoder most people use..

open the ripped DVD vob files....

in the 'output format'.... choose divx 4.xx (which ever version u r using)... double click to config the settings....

choose mp3 as the audio codec for encoding...

then fiddle around with the resolution and stuffs.. which i also presume u know.. coz u know how to encode to VCD....

then 'Flask It'... it is pretty simple.....

DO NOT use FlaskMPEG unless you want a crappy DivX movie. Check out this guide using Nandub. It is one of the BEST encoding utilities out there. It is harder to use than Flask but it is WELL worth it.

Use doom9.org for a nice step-by-step walk through on encoding. ;)

Thanks guys. I didn't say I did DVD --> VCD yet. :) I just saw the instructions and obtained the software req'd for it. DVD2SVCD looks like a great proggy to do it with. I presume you can just leave it unburned as a file on your PC to watch.

I just want to explore a DIVX encode since it's obviously superior quality.

Anyway, thanks for the replies!

I would not call Flask movies "crappy". While I have not used the method from the guide that Jack mentioned, Flask is INSANELY simple, and easily watchable quality, but see for yourself. Try Flask, and if it does fine for you, stick with it. You'll want to get SmartRipper to rip your DVD's to your harddrive first before converting to DIVX. Oh, and it should not be take you 10 hours to convert to DIVX, more like 3-4 on a 1GHz (my Athlon 950 will do a 100 minute movie in about 4 hours.) There are links at VCDHELP.com that will take you to guides for this. Hope this helps, pm me if you need more and I'll try to help!

Flask is not worth;

-The Hard drives space or
-The cpu cycles or
-The time spent learning it or
-The time spent watching an encode from it

Users of Flask -Please do not share your Flask crap with others with on file sharing programs! I hate it when I download that $hit!

Flask totally sucks, and you may run into DVD's it can't even handle, so you would have to learn another program anyway! If you want simple, learn Virtual Dub method, if you want good; learn Nandub.

I did SVCD's the old way till I tried this program. It takes a little longer but its super easy. Just 2 minutes of setup and goto bed, when you wake up just burn the bin and cue files. It even keeps the dvd chapters.

Thanks for the tips guys. I will most likely stay away from Flask since it seems to be an older method according to all the good resources on the web. I'll have to take a look at all your recommendations too.

Can you tell me about the quality that DVD2SVCD produces? If it's DIVX-like, I may stick with that as I don't have much time to learn it all nowadays. I will eventually, but you know.. first things first.

THanks.

You don't have to stay away from flask, I believe its XMPEG now and capable, but IMHO GordianKnot for a complete package DVD>DIVX is very nice, but if you're serious, I've done my best work with Nandub. I use it mainly for encoding my own video's rather than DVD ripping/encoding, but the idea is the same. IMHO, nothing touches Nandub, very flexible and powerful (with a fairly steep learning curve however) and excellent output.

DVD2SVCD produces super, very close to dvd, quality video if your looking for something to play on a standalone. If you just want something for your computer stay with Divx because it uses less disks.

Nandub does NOT have a steep learning curve. Flask does! Flask may "appear" simpler, but it is very hard to learn to get anywhere near acceptable results from it. I started out with Flask, and look back on it as being a total waste of time. There is no real learning curve to Nandub because there are excellent tutorials out there and Nandub does most of the work for you. The interface isn't as user friendly, but who needs user friendly when people put up guides on the web with pictures and very detailed instructions. After a couple encodes you shouldn't even need the guide anymore. I would suggest only using Flask if you are totally lazy and don't plan to share your encodes or take pride in your work.
