DVD Drives are not working !!! Please help

Hi,

I am having problems with my dvd drives. I had one installed and it worked fine. Now, when I installed another one, it didnt work, even though I had the Slave jumper right and BIOS recognized it!!!. So, I went back and disconnected the 2nd drive, and now none of them work !!! I dont know whats wrong here. I am connecting the power to molex connectors in the power supply. The BIOS recognizes it but when I plug in the CD, neither one reads. Nor do they boot the windows XP CD. Fortunately, I installed windows XP when one drive was working. Please help 🙁...

My motherboard is Epox 9NPA+Ultra

Hi, Some IDE CS (Cable Select) cables do not also do Master/Slave. If the connectors are color coded then Blue to the MB, black is the Master (C🙂 and Gray is the Slave (D🙂. Both must be jumpered CS. If no color code then sounds like you are doing it right. Master is C: and Slave is D: on any connectors.

Never heard of what you are talking about with ide cables needing the cs setup. I have setup hundreds of optical drives over the years and always use master/slave.

Master is C: and Slave is D: on any connectors.

Windows assigns drive letters. An optical drive on the secondary channel is not going to be assigned "c:".

Is the old drive jumpered as master? Try starting Win with neither of the drives hooked up, then booting with just the old drive hooked up first. If it works, try adding the other drive again. It could be a bad ide cable as well.

You didn't do any cable swapping while it was powered up did you?

Hi Jack, Try searching for CABLE SELECT. You have a lot to learn. Might also take a look at an Floppy cable to see one method of CS. Good Luck, Jim

:thumbsup: Good point. Set the jumpers to CSEL and then use the cable as indicated by the colors. (Blue=mobo, Black = Drive 0, Gray = Drive 1.) Using M/S can be old hat - yesterday's news. Some of the newer systems do not like it.

Oh wait... I remember now. I had the molex cable jack hooked up in a wrong way in my power supply. If you look @ the molex connector, it has 4 pins (female). I think I switched the 5V pin with 12V pin and vice versa when I connected incorrectly in my powersupply. I dont know why I did that...it even has a key so that the molex connector doesnt plug in incorrectly but meh.. I guess I was too desperate to see my system boot up windows and apparently fried the drives.

Moreover, one of the drive is making weird "click click" noises... with a frequency of 1 Hz. It seems that its trying to run the motor but its fried!!! Anyways, thanks to everyone for the reply. I am pretty sure I "burned" the burner 😛.
