DVD drive won't work

My DVD drive recently broke, so I got a new one. The BIOS detected it ok and then XP detected it, but put a disk drive with a red question by it in Windows Explorer. So, I restarted. From that point on, the bios had trouble detecting it fast. Instead, it would say it found the dvd drive, but it would sit there for like 1 minute before starting to load XP. When I checked in the bios settings, all the vendor information was garbled for the dvd drive. XP no longer detects it either. So, I bought another dvd drive, and it started the same way, but now has the same issue as the previous one. There's no way 2 dvd drives in a row are messed up. I updated my bios, still no luck. Tried different cables too. Is it possible my sata connectors are messed up somehow?

Make sure your SATA controller has the most up to date drivers. If that doesn't work, try plugging in the drive to another SATA port. Finally, if you have a known good DVD drive hanging around, install that and see if it works. Hope this helps.
