New build, on a ASUS P5W DH. I tried installing a few DVD games of mine and its basically just locking up.

When I go to play a CD in my CD drive it hangs the system for about 3 seconds, but it still reads.. this rig also has new cabling, PS, CPU, mem, etc..

I've updated the firmware for both and it still happens, BIOS is pretty much default. DVD is a Plextor PX-716A, CD is a Sony, jumpers and all are set proper.

Read this and see if it applies to your situation. If it doesn't, check Device Manager and make sure the DVD/CD drives are running in DMA mode vs PIO. But read this, too, from another forum:

"I've got this board and it's brilliant.

Except for one thing, which I don't know if they brought this up in the article. The system I built had a 200gig SATA HDD, two PATA HDDs, and a DVD RW. The problem was that you connect the two PATA HDDs into the primary IDE slot (blue) with the cable which is documented (and blue also) for use in this slot... says it's a HDD cable etc which is perfect - nothing at all wrong with that.

However, the other IDE cable (which is labled and documented as a CDROM cable) which you would assume goes into the other IDE slot is then useless... as what you'd think was the secondary IDE slot is a raid controller that doesn't support ATAPI devices...

As such I had to plug the two PATA HDDs into that and had to pop the DVD RW into the primary IDE slot where you really want the hard disks to be. Now, to me this is a nuisance I was able to work around... but to less able people building a system this could be a real pain. Especially when parts are labled and colour coded so those who are maybe new to building systems will lead you to the wrong conclusions."
