DVD drive won't read discs

My DVD drive has been on the fritz recently and and doesn't always read DVDs or CDs. I've never had a problem burning to a disc just reading them. I looked for a new firmware on the NEC site but the version I downloaded (2.1A) didn't recognize my drive. I know these drives were pretty popular when they came out. Is there something I can do to fix this?
