DVD Drive will burn WON'T READ

The DVD drive was functioning fine over the wkd, and then two days ago it started having problems playing media.
I put in either an "original" content DVD or CD (movie or music CD bought at store), or a burned disc, the computer :
1)Spins up and detects media type in drive
2)Upon attempt to open disc, displays this message:

Insert a disc
Please insert disc into drive E:.

3)Opens disc tray.

HOWEVER if I insert blank CD or DVD and use Windows Drag-and-Drop burn functionality, the content is added to said disc. I've verified it's burned correctly by reading the disc via my desktop drive, YET the laptop drive will not see that same content it's just burned.

Huh.

Additionally when I try reading an original content DVD with Windows Media Center it asks if I want to burn a disc as opposed to recognizing the movie.

I've uninstalled the DVD drive, reinstalled it, updated all the drivers, tried reading several DVDs and CDs to no avail. I'm not sure what steps to take next. Firmware?
(The fact that I don't find this model listed on the Optiarc support sites also gives me pause.)

Any owners of either this drive or this comp having the same issue? I hope this is an easy fix, as I've only had this lappy for 3 months.

Gah, not like anyone's reading this post, but NOW
1)Drive doesn't see original content DVD/CDs nor burnt ones (the "insert disc" prompt)
2)Sees and successfuly burns blank DVD/CDs
3)Plugging in other removable media (jump drives, memory cards) results in a "format media in drive" prompt, which I don't want to do and lose all the data on the media.

Sound familiar to anyone?

FYI, a burner has two lasers - one for reading and one for writing. It is possible for one to fail and not the other. Have you tried a cleaning disk for the read laser? What is your environment? Any smokers?

BTW - I did not lock your post on Peripherals. I would have helped you move it rather than lock it.

Cross posting is a no-no - but you were in Peripherals 1st - locking was not appropriate in my view. 🙂
