I am looking for a good DVD-ROM drive with a speed of 16 X for the DVD and possibly at least 48X for the cds. Which one should I buy? Some people told me that the Lite On 16X is very good. What do you think of that? Thanks to anybody who will help me.

LiteOn makes good cdrw's for a very good price. I don't think they are as competetive in the DVDrom market though. Toshiba is good, but Pioneer has much faster ripping speeds for DVD, and I think slightly better media compatability... but not sure on that.

I am VERY satisfied with my pioneer 116 DVD rom.

Not to sound annoyed but if you do a search, the question has been asked countless times.

Here's what the folks at storagereview.com had to say about the Lite-on:

On the whole, the LTD163 paints one of the most complete DVD-ROM pictures we've yet seen.

In summary, its strengths include:

DVD playback software included with retail package
Audio track advance button in addition to eject button
Low pricing
CD and CD-R transfer rates outperform all competitors
Excellent performance in file and disc copy tests
Quickest DAE ever measured from a single-beam reader
Fastest DVD transfer rates
Drive is extremely quiet when playing DVD-Videos

Overall, we are very impressed with Lite-On's latest DVD-ROM drive. It shatters DVD-ROM barriers in transfer rates and DAE speed while providing quiet operation during movie playback. On the other hand, the drive could use some work with DAE quality with more banged up discs, and perhaps in a related matter, improve its playback error correction with audio CDs. Perhaps these minor infractions may be eliminated with firmware tweaks.

In the end, the drive easily impresses us enough to supplant the Pioneer DVD-116 for a coveted Leaderboard spot.

Thanks for all your comments. I think that I will go the the Lite-On 16X. Last question, do this drive read correctly CD-R, even the cheapest brand names? I actually have a LG 52X and when I play to a game burned on a a Smart Buy cd, I always have to open the drive and put again and again and again the cd and the drive and this is so annoying! That's a little bit for this reason that I want to buy a DVD-ROM. I have to change my cd-rom drive, so I'll go with a DVD-ROM!

Thanks to anybody who helped me and who will answer to my last question.
