DVD Drive(s) acting up....

I have an NEC DVD RW and a Samsung DVD ROM drive. Running XP Pro SP2.
Just rescently I've had to re-install Windows fresh because of several issues. I am now having trouble with my drives. They just will not respond. Generally after a restart I can open the drive and insert a disk and it will read it. After that, nothing.....
Neither drive will open with pushing the open button on the drive, or using the eject in windows. Only thing that fixes it is restart......

Any input is very much appreciated.

i am sure you already tried this but have you made sure that your jumper setting are correct and your cables and plugged in nice and tight on both ends? power cables? what type of PSU do you have?

did u have this same problem before you reinstalled windows? do they show up correctly in the bios? do the power lights come on?

any other weird behavior or is it just the optical drives?
