i have an older computer that i built myself to save a little cash. my iomega cd burner died on me so i replaced it with a new dvd burner from new egg. the dvd drive is a lite on, but comes up in diagnostic software as an ATAPI DH20A4P. the firmware is 9p59. the system recognizes the frive and will read the cd and show all files on the cd. you can open and close pics but if you try to open a video it opens windows media player, shows a white screen like its going to play the video and stays there. it does not lockup the computer. you can close all windows and get back to the desktop, but as soon as you press the eject button or eject from the right click drop down menu of the drive it reboots the computer. it has only done this if you try to play a video file from a burned cd. any idea what could cause this and how to fix it?

What is the video format? Have you tried loading the same video from hard drive to see if it crashes as well?

video format is mpg or avi. haven't tried coping to hard drive then playing it. the disc was burnt a long time ago with roxio 5. could this be the problem? maybe i have to copy all to hard drive then reburn it with new software???

It really shouldnt matter, its the same format regardless. Im just trying to figure out if the video files are the ones locking the system of if it really is the drive.

ok i'll give that a shot. i have to reload xp anyway, so i'm going to go with more updated software for the cd and dvd burning.

Let us know how it goes. I know reinstalling individual codecs fixed my crash and reboot problem.

just for s & g's i uninstalled all my old codecs and installed the xp codec that a friend linked to me and i worked so far. i can eject the disc and it doesn't reboot. the only thing that happened with uninstalling those codecs is some files must have gotten deleted and every time i boot up i get an installer trying to reinstall photo gallery. thats it though. just have to track down where photo gallery is coming from so i know which disk to put in and i should be good. thanks for all your input guys. it was greatly appreciated!!!
