DVD-drive problems

Ok, so I bought Benq 1640 today and installed it without problems. I inserted a burned DVD into the drive and it didn't work very well, I got CRE's (Cyclic Redundancy Error) and decided to use CDCheck to fix it. Well, it didn't work as expected, because after like 30 mins and thousands of failed tries to fix the first file, the computer just froze so I had to turn it off manually.

Now when I turned it back on, the drive wouldn't open, so I rebooted and eventually unplugged too, but it just wouldn't open. Then I pushed the pin into the hole and took the DVD out but it didn't help at all.

So I decided to update the firmware to BSOB (it was BSLB before I think), I downloaded the zip. file from Benq homesite, extracted it and ran it, well it didn't give any errors or anything but when I checked how was it recognized, and I saw only "B" as it's name. Then I noticed that I had my jumper settings for it as Slave, I'm not sure if it matters at all which one it was, but it didn't seem to work at all (I think) while being slave, so I decided to switch it to master, and then it seemed to be identified correctly and even the green light flashes when I start my computer... but for some reason it still won't open/close or read anything.

So does anyone have any idea what's the problem here?

Oh yeah and almost forgot to mention that when I go to My Computer and click the DVD drive I could open it even when it had nothing inside it and I could create a folder in there (I think thats pretty weird) + it freezes when I for example left click the icon and then click explore...

Yes it is... but how could it be toast, because it worked perfectly fine until the shutdown? :(

Well, that's just plain bad luck and I've seen it before. Since it's new, just exchange it for a new one rather than spend hours troubleshooting. If the next one is bad, then resume with troubleshooting.

In the OP it sounds like it never worked properly and then possibly a flash upgrade that failed. How is that working fine until shutdown?

Oh, yeah, sorry I didn't explain it very well... I did try a second disc too (it was a cd not dvd though) to make sure that it's the DVD that's not working and I could move files from it without problems.

Just a question, does that flash upgrade affect the warranty?
