DVD drive problems

Ok, heres the situation. My old dvd drive stopped reading dvds, so i bought a new one. Well, the new one will not read audio cds, it will read dvds, and data cds just fine(i.e. i can install games that came on a cd), but audio cds dont work, and i makes the comp hang. or sometimes the drive just says theres no disc in the drive. Any obvious things i should do? Please help.

What brand and model is the new drive. Without the basic info, it's hard to offer any advice.

I bought a BenQ 16X when it first came out and it wouldn't read already burnt DVD-R but would read +R's fine gay thing, took it back.

Just in case, make sure DAE is turned on in the device properties...

All modern optical drives can give you sound from an audio CD digitally, meaning over the IDE or SATA cable, so you don't need the separate analog cable that plugs into your motherboard/sound card.

What program are you using to listen to audio CDs? That could be a problem.

Or maybe your drive is a dud... but first make sure your volume settings has CD audio unmuted as well.

well, what i figuered. That what i get for getting a super cheap dvd drive. Guess i gotta get a new one, dont know how much of a pain in the ass it would be to return the beyotch.

btw, w/ the new drive digital audio, would that work on 2000, or is it just xp? Mobo is one i purchased last year(damn near exactly)

a surprising number of DVD burners are sold defective
shipping has also gotten a lot rougher in recent times, for some reason
they are really throw away items, since a $40 DVD costs a manuf prob $10 or less

However, since yours will read data, but not music, it would appear its your fault -
something like mp3 files are not associated with your player software anymore. (folder options/file types)
like the man said the audio slider levels have to be "up", both in windows and your player software
and the new drive (not the old) must be associated with your sound card
and onboard sound, if used, must be enabled in bios

Windows 2000 generally won't have DAE on by default in new drives (that is, with a newer service pack, it will turn it on for ones in there already), where XP will--most of the time. Still a good idea to check in the properties for it.
