DVD Drive problem?

QueBert

Hi, I'm having a problem with my DVD drive being slow, movies seem to almost always start to skip (quite a bit) at some point in the movie. I don't notice any spin up/spin down problems, except with my Simpsons DVD, which might be a disc/drive issue, since the disc's look unlike any other DVD's I own. Any ways here is my configuration

Xp 1600+ on a MSI K7 Master MB
256 Micron DDR
Geforce 2 GTS 32meg
IBM Deskstar 404 gig 7200
12x Buslink DVD
16x LG CDRW
Windows XP Professional

I installed the latest VIA 4in1's seem to not help. As for DVD software I've tried both Power & WinDVD
Not sure if the VIA's installed correctly, seem to be different from the 98 ones, I got no prompt for AGP mode or IDE info, it says VIA in my sys settings though.

Also I tried running DVDspeed, I was getting about 1.2x-2.6x on the first 3 disc's I tried. About .55-.75k on the Simpson ones. I'm confused here, I don't think the drive has a laser problem, but if it does is this fixable? I'm not really looking to go out and buy another DVD drive, thanks!

Uninstall the IDE chipset drivers
Reboot
Reinstall the IDE chipset drivers
Reboot

Go into the device manager and make sure that the ATAPI controller for the DVD is set to UDMA or DMA mode. Disable your antivirus software. Rerun the PowerDVD diagnostics to set the device to use UDMA or DMA. Reboot. Disable your antivirus software and try watching a movie. If this does not work, get the previous IDE chipset drivers and repeat the steps above.
