Ok, i got my 6x slot pioneer a year ago... $130. Now, for a 10x something, we're looking in the $150's... WTF!@? shouldn't it have gone DOWN???

I'm only replacing mine because i want a dvd drive that will work w/ clone cd. And having a dvd, cd rom, and cdr is looking very ridiculous and heavy :(

Over here in Canada DVD drives were running at about $130-150 a few months ago. Now thier going for about $180 at the cheapest. Don't know what happened... it seemed like they just shot up overnight and havent come down since.

If I remember dvd drives use a chip that cell phones use for there display. Right now a majority of the chips are going into cell phones since the demand is so high. The limited supply of these chips for dvd drives are keeping prices up. Also as fast as they are selling cell phones here it doesnt look like its going to let up for a while.

I think he meant cell phone displays, not DVD set top displays.

Hey Inguyen,

Look for the Pioneer 105S(slot loading like a car CD) or 115(tray loaded). It's a way cool 16X DVD player for $125 +/- a little!

its true. cell phones are driving up the demand for those chips. And any that is left over gets gobbled up by oems. And whatever is left gets sold at a premium. :(

Jumpem, he can't use a Pioneer for clonecd. Hey, do you have a decoder card? If not I'd recommend the Thoshiba 12x/40x with Hollywood+ card combo at buy.com. That drive works great on clonecd.

That's interesting. No Pioneers are listed on the hardware list, but that doesn't mean that it is not possible. What different protections have you burned through with it and how long did it take?

you can use the pioneer w/ clone, but NOT w/ the special reading features to make raw copies..
