DVD drive output on PC monitor

Hey All,

I'm just curious if dvd drives try to upres dvd movies to the resolution of the PC monitor, or if it's still output at some traditional resolution. I'm wondering because I'm going to be receiving a new Dell 20" widescreen monitor and was curious if dvds I play thru the dvi connection are going to try to upres to the 1680x1050 resolution, or what.

all i know is it goes through a crap load of conversions and filters before you actually see it. maybe someone else can explain more than me

So, I'm wondering if it's going to produce a better quality picture using my xbox 360, which is supposed to upconvert dvd's to 720p via the vga cable, when compared to using my dvd drive connected to the same monitor via dvi.

I'll basically find out for myself this week, but I'm bored at work and the question popped into my head, so I thought I'd ask around.

I actually saw that over there as I tend to browse that site from time to time. There's a ton of stuff in that post, so just from scanning the post quickly, is this to get higher quality movies when watching them via a computer?

The drive "does" nothing but provide the files. DVDs are mastered at 720x480 60 Hz interlaced for NTSC, and 720x576 50 Hz for PAL.

The rest is scaling, deinterlacing and interpolation. There is no magic "upres" math that would make extra pixels appear - you get what's on the source media, no more no less, mangled to fit your screen res.

Data processing rule #1: Data processing always implies loss of data.

No postprocessing is going to make things have a higher actual resolution - for example, if you upscale from 480 lines to 720, the extra 240 lines will be made up by interpolating data from the existing 480. No extra information will magically appear.
