Planning on building a new comp and I can't decide whether to get the Toshiba 16X DVD or a CDRW. What do you think will be better in the long run? Is having a DVD that important?

having a dvd player all depends on if you need it. if you don't have a dvd player at home already, and watch/plan to watch dvd's, then get the dvd drive. if you like burning cds, then you should get the burner. if money isn't a problem, you can get both. another choice is the new cdrw/dvd combos that go for about 200.

You can get both for 200, not a combo, let's say a...Lite-On 16x/10x/40x and a Toshiba 16x at newegg.com

By the way, if you're going to be doing DVD ripping then don't get the 16x Toshiba. It has a problem with it and only rips many DVDs at about 2x. Try the 12x Toshiba or the 16x Pioneer instead. If you're worried about the lower speed rating affecting performance then don't because DVDs only read at 1x anyway. The only thing that the max speed is really useful for is ripping, so it's kind of ironic that the higher speed rating of the 16x Toshiba actually hinders what it's meant for.
