I've found a Toshiba 16x DVD drive at newegg.com OEM for $62 shipped. Link
I've also found the same drive at buy.com Retail for $77 shipped. Link

If I go with the cheaper OEM drive how will I get the software I need to play the DVDs? Is it worth the $15 to get the retail box?

OEM doesn't come with software most of the time. If you bought a video card recently, it should have come with a software dvd player anyway.

I have a Herc 3d Prophet 2 mx 400 32 mb. I'm not sure if it came with DVD software. Even if it did will it be as good as the software that comes with the actual DVD drive?

I would say the DVD software that comes with your video card will actually be better than the one that comes with your drive... your video card should have DVD decode capability, and the software provided will take advantage of it...

Tunaboo is right!!! Even if you don't really now, but may plan on it in the future. The 16x dvd of toshiba seems to limit its transfers for like 2x max. That's pretty slow...

go to www.storagereview.com and take a look at pioneer review...it pretty much beat the toshiba in every area, including important dae ripping.

Also newegg for 78.00 shipped has the aopen 16x40x which is a rebadged pioneer retail package.

Yopu want to get the software as it can easily run 20-50 dollars for a program...I haven't seen any free stuff yet that works as good as powerdvd or windvd 2000.

Thanks for the heads up about the 2x transfer speed. I'm going to take a look at the pioneer drives and see if I can find one for a good price.

Which Pioneer DVD drive is the best one? All those numbers are confusing. I really want one of the slot loading drives now that ive seen pictures of them.

106S I believe is the current slotload Pioneer and hence the one to get.

I've got the 105S and its loud as hell, heard the 106 is better though.
It also runs hot, but I use it as a CDROM as well.

dont get the 116 or the 105, get the 106. 105 and 116 suck at rippping audio.

Aopens are rebadged pioneers? where did you see that?

MortaniuS: AOpen slot loads are known to be rebadged Pioneers. And besides, Newegg.com advertieses their AOpen 16X slot load DVD to be a Pioneer. ;)

Enjoy. ;)

Divx is the encoding type..ripping is something else...

However go to go.to/doom9...I suggest getting one of the rippacks...I like the smartripper program for ripping the vob files to harddrive.

Many have favorite method of divx encoding and they often differ greatly in terms of complexity and time to encode.

Nanub = excellent quality, complex to setup
Fair use = very good quality, easier then nanub, but you need to use many other programs to rip audio and encode separately then merge with video.

Flaskmpeg = good quality based on optimal settings, easiest to run, more for newbies to get their feet wet.

So if you buy a dvd drive OEM, then do you get the audio cable w/ it? Cause I want the pioneer 106s from newegg but it's OEM, and I don't know where to get an audio cable from

You can buy the audio cable from newegg.com. It costs $2 plus $3-$5 shipping plus any tax. It's on this page.

I didn't think about this when I bought my Pioneer 106S a week ago. I'll have to pick one up! :)
